Kay Lespwa a sandbag house for Eugene in Mizak

Well, It is now July 27th 2010 and we have been home from Haiti since April 2nd. We now have figures on the cost of Kay Lespwa (they added an 'L' on the sign) of Eugene's and also for the second house for Saint Rose. The total cost given for Eugene's house is $5,991.75 US. The house was not finished when we left. A little parging on the outside, paint, and some door latches and window latches were yet to be done. A short block wall was added between the corner of the house and the porch column. Block was present to do the same on the other side. The extra cost to finish is estimated to be $250.00 US.

This is the back side showing that the parging is not yet done on the corner.  There was suppose to be an overhang of one foot on the sides too. 

This shows front inside view.  Originally vents were to be put near the top of the wall and filled with vent block.  Because the construction of the rafters provided good vent, the original vent was to be filled in.

The doors and windows need to be varnished yet.  The gutter made of PVC pipe needs to be reversed so that the lower pipe fits inside the upper pipe to carry the water to a barrel.

Eugene is very happy with her home.  It is airy and pleasant inside.  She has living with her, her father, husband, and 7 children.

This list is not complete but is that  for which I have accounting.  The final cost of materials has been reported as $5222 US.   Payroll for 4 weeks $769 US.  Total expenses $6000 US.

Note: David Smith has build a house patterned after this model in Gonnaive since ours were built.  An incomplete estimate puts his costs around $1700 US.   His house was built under greatly differant circumstances however (location, availability, equipment, etc)
